Barditch High School decided to have an All - School Reunion. Over 450 people came to the event. There were tours of the old school building and a picnic at Confederate Park. Several former teachers were on hand to tell stories about the old days. Ms. Mabel Yates, the English teacher for over fifty years, was wheeled to the Park.
Some eyes rolled and there were a few low groans (叹息声) when Ms. Yates was about to speak. Many started looking at their watches and coming up with excuses to be anywhere instead of preparing to listen to a lecture from an old woman who had few kind words for her students and made them work harder than all the other teachers combined.
Then Ms. Yates started to speak: “I can't tell you how pleased I am to be here. I haven't seen many of you since your graduation, but I have followed your careers and enjoyed your victories as well as crying for your tragedies. I have a large collection of newspaper photographs of my students. Although I haven't appeared in person, I have attended your college graduations, weddings and even the births of your children, in my imagination.”
Ms. Yates paused and started crying a bit. Then she continued: “It was my belief that if I pushed you as hard as I could, some of you would succeed to please me and others would succeed to annoy me. Regardless of our motives, I can see that you have all been successful in your chosen path.”
“There is no greater comfort for an educator than to see the end result of his or her. years of work. You have all been a great source of pleasure and pride for me and I want you to know I love you all from the bottom of my heart.”
There was a silence over the crowd for a few seconds and then someone started clapping. The clapping turned into cheering, then into a deafening roar (呼喊).     It was a pleasant surprise to learn this week that three large poultry companies had greatly reduced their use of antibiotics in healthy chickens, a move that could help slow the appearance of antibiotic resistance in bacteria that cause diseases in humans. Other companies ought to follow the lead of these pioneers, and Congress ought to ban the use of medically important antibiotics in animal husbandry except to cure sick animals.
Strong action is needed because many germs that infect humans are growing resistant to treatment with antibiotics. Such resistance occurs unavoidably over time as antibiotic kills off vulnerable strains of a germ and leaves only the more resistant strains to multiply. But in recent decades the growth of resistance has been increased by overuse of antibiotics in agriculture, where companies routinely use the drugs to promote growth on less feed and to prevent disease in healthy animals. As a result, some germs that infect both animals and humans have become resistant to antibiotics, and even germs that do not infect humans are capable of transferring their antibiotic-resistance genes to germs that do.
That is why the report in Sunday's Times by Marian Burros was so encouraging. She found that three poultry companies that produce a third of the chickens consumed by Americans each year - Foster Farms, Perdue Farms and Tyson Foods — have greatly reduced the use of antibiotics in healthy chickens and are using them primarily to treat sick chickens.
There is no reason that other poultry producers could not do the same, and probably the pork and beef industries as well. It is unacceptable that any industry should use medically important antibiotics for the economic purpose of fostering growth. Congress and the Food and Drug Administration need to restrain the use of animal antibiotics that are related to human medicines.

B.is unavoidable in the poultry industry

D.threatens the effectiveness of related medicines
48.Why does the author mention Marian Burros' report?
A.To illustrate how the three poultry companies use antibiotics
B.To emphasize the functions of antibiotics in animal husbandry
C.To show the author's prediction of the future use of antibiotics
D.To represent the decline in antibiotics use in the poultry industry
49.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “restrain” in Paragraph 4?
A.increase B.limit C.promote D.restore
50.What is the author's attitude to the use of antibiotics to make profit?
A.Intolerable B.Favorable C.Neutral D.Ambiguous

At first, I didn't recognize the symptoms that we all had in common. Friends mentioned that they were having trouble concentrating. It wasn't burnout—we still had energy. It wasn't depression—we didn't feel hopeless. We just felt somewhat joyless and aimless.
It turns out there's a name for that: languishing.
Languishing is a sense of inactivity and emptiness. It feels as if you're muddling through your days, looking at your life through a foggy windshield.
In psychology, we think about mental health on a spectrum from depression to flourishing. Flourishing is the peak of well-being. Depression is the valley of well-being. Languishing is the neglected middle child of mental health. It's the emptiness between depression and flourishing—the absence of well-being. You're not functioning at full capacity. Languishing dulls your motivation, disrupts your ability to focus, and greatly increases the possibility that you'll cut back on work.
Part of the danger is that when you're languishing, you might not notice the dulling of delight or the decreasing of drive. You don't catch yourself slipping slowly into aloneness; you're indifferent to your indifference. When you can't see your own suffering, you don't seek help or even do much to help yourself.
So what can we do about it? People who became more focused on their work managed to avoid languishing. Interrupted attention is an enemy of engagement and excellence. To go beyond languishing, give yourself some uninterrupted time. It clears out constant distractions and gives us the freedom to focus. And try starting with small wins by focusing on a challenge that matters to you—an interesting project, a worthwhile goal, Or a meaningful conversation.
We still have a lot to learn about what causes languishing and how to cure it, but naming it might be a first step. It could help to defog our vision, giving us a clearer window into what had been an unclear experience. It could remind us that we weren't alone: languishing is common and shared.
By acknowledging that so many of us are languishing, we can start giving voice to quiet despair and lighting a path out of the emptiness.
51.Which definition best suits the word “languishing”?
A.Feeling exhausted and without hope B.Becoming weaker or failing to improve
C.Making someone want to achieve something D.Going beyond the usual limits of something
52.Which of the following can be described as languishing?
A.Seeking help when you are suffering B.Realizing that you are not alone in despair
C.Giving yourself some uninterrupted time D.Being indifferent to your lack of enthusiasm
53.What could psychologists do to help solve the problems of languishing?
A.Give people more freedom B.See it as depression
C.Name it clearly D.Remove it from a spectrum
54.Why is it significant to know languishing is common and shared?
A.We can let the silent despair speak up and find a way out
B.We can continue to learn more about languishing
C.We can see it as basically the same as depression
D.We can study it as the complete opposite of flourishing
55.Which can be the best title of the passage?
A.Languishing—a common symptom B.Languishing—a mental health problem
C.Concentrating—a way to avoid languishing D.Quieter despair—danger of languishing

At the age of seven, while his friends were spending their allowances on candy and toys, Jose Adolfo Quisocola was busy saving money for basic purchases. To try to get his peers (同龄人) to do the same, the boy from Peru came up with the idea of an eco- bank, the Bartselana Student Bank, which allows kids of all ages to become financially independent while also helping the environment.
Set up in 2012, the bank is the world's first bank for kids. To become a member, a kid has to bring in at least 5 kilograrms of solid waste and set a savings goal. Once accepted, all bank “partners” are required to deposit at least one additional kilogram of recyclables on a monthly basis and observe other requirements, such as attending financial education and environmental management workshops.
The waste accumulated is sold to local recycling companies, which, thanks to Jose's efforts, pay a higher - than - market rate for everything brought in by the bank members. The money received is placed in the personal account where they collect until the savings goal is reached. The account holder can then withdraw the money, or choose to leave it and make it continue to grow for a bigger target. “At the beginning, my teachers thought I was crazy or that a child could not undertake this type of project,” Jose recalls. “They did not understand that we are not the future of the country but its present. Luckily, I had the support of the school headmaster and an assistant in my class.”
The boy's efforts paid off, and by 2013, the bank had over 200 members, who brought in one ton of recyclable waste. Today, the eco - bank, which now has the support of several local institutions, boasts ten educational centers. They are designed to teach over 3, 000 students, aged 10 to 18, to become financially independent, use their money wisely, and help the environment. Not surprisingly, Jose's efforts have earned him several national and international awards. On November 20, 2018, Jose won Children's Climate Prize, which comes with a medal and $ 5, 500 in prize money and is given to a child or youth who has accomplished an extraordinary achievement for the climate or environment.
